Mason turned 10 on July 30th! Can you believe it? Mason and his family are good friends of ours in Pasadena. Nana used to sit with
Mason when he was only a baby. Now look how big he is. Time flies!

Lauryn, Ian, Mom and Dad just got back from a four-day family campout at Gumboot Lake in the Shasta-Trinity Forest -- bear country!
We hiked, swam, and fished. Ian caught his very first fish ever -- a rainbox trout. He caught it with a worm. Mom and Dad
also caught a fish each. Lauryn didn't catch one but she helped us eat the three we caught.
While we were hiking we found another smaller lake above Gumboot Lake. We saw bear sign, but no bears. Good thing; that would have been a bit frightful.

[December 27, 2006]
Over the Christmas break we drove up to Lake Shasta because we'd never been before. We spent four days and nights touring the area.
One of the places we toured was Shasta Dam on the Sacramento River. In its day it was ranked as one of the great civil engineering
feats of the world. We toured the hydroelectric power plant at the base of the dam. It has five turbines with a capacity of
610 MW - the fourth largest hydroelectric plant in California. Power is generated at 13,800 volts and is stepped up
to 230 kV for transmission to Californian consumers.
We also visited Lake Shasta Caverns. We road a 65-foot catamaran across the lake to get the bus that would take us up the mountain to the entrance
of the caverns. The
boat captain told us that this is American Bald Eagle country, but it was so cold and it had begun to rain, so we didn't get to do much bird watching.
We also visited Burney Falls and took a drive up to see Mount Shasta.
On the way home we went through Eureka because we'd never been there. We continued south and took the scenic Redwood Highway through
the Avenue of the Giants where we got to drive through one of the giant redwoods.

My dearest grandmother Clara passed away this morning, age 87 and 1/2 years. Nana (Sharon Rose) woke us this morning about 7 a.m. to let us know that she had passed in the night.
Night before last I held Grandma in my arms as she sat at the edge of her bed. She seemed to know time was short, though she had been mostly incoherent
these past few days. She resisted when I laid her down, back into bed. She asked me not to leave. I sat for awhile. It was about 11 p.m. when I left her,
knowing she would probably not make it through the night.
At her passing her best friend in the world was a six-year-old boy, Ian, whom she had grown to love deeply nearly since his birth, shortly after which
she had moved into our home; and next to him, his 2-year-old sister. I was her guardian, protector and provider whom she trusted. Nana and my wife were
her care-givers, whom she loved and sometimes tolerated.
I grieve our loss. But I am happy that Grandma's last few years were filled with joy in my children. They may never know their contribution to this lovely person.

Last week Henry, Edel and Mark flew in from Switzerland and joined Sarah, Deborah, Kathryn and families for a vacation at
Bass Lake and Yosemite. Among many wonderful adventures and a lot of fun, Kathryn and I celebrated our 14th wedding anniversary. We

Grandpa Gene flew in from Baltimore to visit us this week. He took us to the Western Railway Museum in Suisun.
We rode streetcars and electric trains and saw all sorts of historic cars and exhibits. Next day he took us to
Sonoma Train Town, which is an amusement park with a train theme. The kids enjoyed this even more than the train museum.

What fun it is checking out all the family postings! I love it! I
loved Brian's letter to his dad. It's so true how, with age, we start
gaining perspective and appreciation for our family -- no matter how near
or far.
Sean Patrick Dennis will be born (via c-section) on December 20th. We
look forward to welcoming this fiesty little boxing boy. My poor tummy
is taking a real beating! When he gets out into the "real world," I'll
have to show him who's boss! Famous last words :)
We're having lots of fun gearing up for the baby. We plan to go out
and kick the tires on a couple of stroller showroom models this weekend,
and of course, decorate for Halloween! Aiden can't wait for me to pull
his costume out of storage -- the anticipation is so much fun.
The boys (Ian and Aiden) are doing so great at school. I am so proud
of our little family members. I am so thrilled that Lauryn is walking
and talking. Just wait till the back sass starts up -- then maybe I'll
reconsider my enthusiasm...
Well, I'm going to go catch a cat nap. Doctor's orders (tee hee). I
had some contractions a few weeks ago and my doc put me on restrictions.
I'm doing fine now -- with plenty of rest, no lifting and all that
jazz.
Congratulations on passing your exam Tim!! That is just so fantastic.
I hope your you kick your sinus cold soon.
Lots of love,
Deborah

Hi Dad,
By the way,...although the whole Kartchner Saturday was a great
Saturday for Catherine & I.
The main reason I went was because I knew that you would be there.
I realize you & I don't see each other as often as we would like, and I
wanted to take advantage of the situation. And I want you to know that
I think about you all the time.
As the years fly by, I wish like hell that you & I were better at
communicating with each other.
But...I also hope we both know that the lack of communication, doesn't
mean a lack of a good heart or caring for each other.
I wish my eyes could talk to you. ( I have never been very articulate)
When I look at you, I look at many years of my own happiness as a
child, coupled with some not so happy times,
but at the same time realizing the profound feelings that go with
knowing that it's what life is all about. I guess these feelings come with
age.
Dad, I want you to know that I am very proud of you. Our family has
gone through many changes over the years. And these changes have helped us
all to grow.
It's amazing how a single event in your life may take years to
comprehend how it was beneficial to our growth.
I visited Tim's web site, and thumbed thru the old photos & history of
our family.
Wow, I am speechless. Such memories.
I suppose every man has his solemn moments when he is alone, and
reflecting on his life.
And now a days....I am at peace with those feelings.
Dad, when we are together, don't think about what I don't say, know
that my eyes say that I adore you.

The summer is nearly gone. What a busy whirl. We had a great vacation in Austria and Switzerland, the highlight being
spending time with Papa, Mama and Mark (Henry, Edel, and Mark Sturcke). We all hiked, swam, guitared, ate, bowled,
and ping-ponged. Ian absolutely adores the Sturcke family (with good cause; they did their fair share of spoiling him).
We started this trip with 1st class accomodations on Swiss Air, our first such experience, thanks to our frequent flyer
miles on American Airlines and their partnership with Swiss Air. We decided to upgrade because Lauryn was still a baby, and Ian was only 5,
and we thought the extra space and accomodation would be helpful. We all traveled much better than coach would have allowed.
Our first stop was overnight in Montreal and a day-tour of the city.
We really enjoyed Old Montreal and wished we could have stayed a bit longer and
taken in more sites.
From Montreal we flew to Switzerland, hired a car, and drove
to Maria Alm, Austria where
we rendezvoused with the rest of the family.
We took a couple of days and drove to one of our favorite European cities, Vienna,
where we visited
our good friends Yanna and Roman, who are from Bratislava and now living in Vien.
We finished up our trip in Muri and Lucerne with a wonderful visit at Oma
and Opa's home. Last time we visited the family in Switzerland they were living in Dallikan. A highlight was seeing Papa's new church in Muri.

I plan to read and summarize on my

I also checked out Duncan's photos. He's a very cute and robust little

It sure got hot around here! Man, I forgot I would be pregnant in the
summer, ugh! I'll know on June 11th, how far along I am. The doc
thinks I'm about 10 weeks along. I'm sick all the time. Well, the end
product will be worth it... once the kid is in school and I'm getting full
night time sleep.
You guys will be headed to Europe for you vacation pretty soon. Hope
your vacation home has air conditioning.
Did you hear about the heat wave in 2003 that killed thousands of the
elderly (when their families went on vacation and left them home) over
there. The French government asked all employees to work on Pentacost
and have their employers donate the funds twoward air conditioners in
senior citizens homes. Of course, no one showed up for work. Well, at
least Clara is in good hands with Nana, when you go.
So, my little pumkin, Ian, is going to Kindergarten this Fall. I am so
excited for him. He will love it, once he gets used to the new
surroundings.
Well, I better stop shooting the breeze and get back to work. Love,
Deborah

dried out? Wow, was that something, or what?! After Saturday, I'll
have all the repairs around this complex finished and, my vacancy rented
out. Yeah for me!! Then I'm going to goof off.
So, Bobby and Megan are having a boy? Did I get that right? What is
on there wish list for the baby? Who's giving Megan a baby shower?
And, when is she due? Heard something about a c-section, ugh! Well, at
least she will know exactly what day the baby's coming!
Well, I should get back to work typing up a rental agreement. I have a
new tenant signing up tomorrow.
Lots of love to all,
Deborah.
P. S. Aiden has plans to type Ian a note today so, keep your eyes

A busy week in Pasadena
I drove Kathryn, Ian and Lauryn to Pasadena the week of October 17th through 23rd to introduce
Lauryn to her Aunties Sarah and Deborah.
A tenant had moved out of one of the three units we own there so I decided
to take advantage of this trip to do some minor repairs and painting.
After a quick inspection I decided to remodel the entire kitchen and bathroom;
new countertops, sinks, tubs, plumbing, floors, fixtures, etc.
This, in addition to painting and replacing the carpeting and vinyl throughout the unit.
On Sunday I created a project plan and did most of my shopping at The Home Depot
where I bought the lumber, tile, moldings, sinks, tub, etc.
On Monday, Kathryn and I met with a carpet installer and chose new carpet
and vinyl which would be installed on Friday. On Wednesday I bought
all of the paint from Dunn Edwards. I wanted the place to look
really clean so I replaced all the electrical outlets, cabinet hardware
and all the miscellaneous fixtures throughout the unit (towel racks, toilet
paper holders, medicine cabinets, curtain hardware, etc.).
On Tuesday I hired my friend Greg (next door neighbor) to help with the work.
We got it all done in a few 12-hour days. Even had time to take Ian
and Aiden (his older cousin) swimming at the Pasadena Westin where we were staying.
I took some photos of the remodelling job which can be viewed here:

Hi, everyone! I miss you all and wish I saw everyone more
frequently than once every few years. Most of you have not even met my

is beautiful, sweet, and very grown-up for her age!
For those of you who don't know, I am in school full-time and have been

psychology. Eventually, I would like to do something in forensic
psychology, although I'm not sure specifically what that will be. So that's
what I'm up to! Caring for Kennedy and school. I'm lucky enough to
not have to work so that I can stay home with Kennedy and have more time
for studying!
Congratulations on the new baby, Tim and Kathryn! She's absolutely
beautiful!
Well, that's all for now! I love and miss everyone! If anyone wants to

[From Tim on June 14, 2004]
Janet came upon a beautiful tribute to mothers, which she asked me to pass on to Grandma. This is very touching and I'm
sure Janet won't mind if we publish it here for everyone to enjoy.
Mothers
For those lucky enough to still be blessed with your Mom, this is beautiful.
For those of us who aren't, this is even more beautiful.
Those who are moms will love this. . .
The young mother set her foot on the path of life. "Is this the long
way?" she asked. And the guide said: "Yes, and the way is hard. And you
will be old before you reach the end of it. But the end will be better
than the beginning.."
But the young mother was happy, and she would not believe that anything
could be better than these years. So she played with her children, and
gathered flowers for them along the way, and bathed them in the clear streams;
and the sun shone on them, and the young Mother cried, "Nothing will ever be
lovelier than this."
Then the night came, and the storm, and the path was dark, and the children
shook with fear and cold, and the mother drew them close and covered them
with her mantle, and the children said, "Mother, we are not afraid, for you
are near, and no harm can come."
And the morning came, and there was a hill ahead, and the children climbed
and grew weary, and the mother was weary. But at all times she said to the
children," A little patience and we are there." So the children climbed, and
when they reached the top they said, "Mother, we would not have done it
without you."
And the mother, when she lay down at night looked up at the stars and said,
"This is a better day than the last, for my children have learned fortitude
in the face of hardness. Yesterday I gave them courage. Today, I have given
them strength."
And the next day came strange clouds which darkened the earth, clouds of war
and hate and evil, and the children groped and stumbled, and the mother said:
"Look up. Lift your eyes to the light!" And the children looked and saw above
the clouds an everlasting glory, and it guided them beyond the darkness. And
that night the Mother said,"This is the best day of all, for I have shown my
children God."
And the days went on, and the weeks and the months and the years, and the
mother grew old and she was little and bent. But her children were tall
and strong, and walked with courage. And when the way was rough, they
lifted her, for she was as light as a feather; and at last they came to a hill,
and beyond they could see a shining road and golden gates flung wide.
And mother said: "I have reached the end of my journey. And now I know
the end is better than the beginning, for my children can walk alone, and
their children after them."
And the children said, "You will always walk with us, Mother, even when
you have gone through the gates." And they stood and watched her as she
went on alone, and the gates closed after her! And they said: "We cannot see
her, but she is with us still. A Mother like ours is more than a memory. She is
a living presence.."
Your Mother is always with you. She's the whisper of the leaves as you walk
down the street; she's the smell of bleach in your freshly laundered socks;
she's the cool hand on your brow when you're not well. Your Mother lives
inside your laughter. And she's crystallized in every tear drop.
She's the place you came from, your first home; and she's the map you follow
with every step you take.
She's your first love and your first heartbreak, and nothing on earth can separate
you. Not time, not space...not even death!

Hi Family!
I know this is short notice, but if any of you can make a trip to Novato, CA for Mom's 85th birthday on March 25th,
we have family dinner reservations planned to honor her. Nancy and her daughter, Trina, will be there, I will be there,
and it would be great if some or all of you could attend too! I imagine Tim can make couch and/or floor space for a few
of you and it is possible to arrange commercial lodging for you also, just let us know your needs.
If you have time off coming from work, or whatever, and would like a mini-vacation, come celebrate this great lady's 85th birthday.
If not, send her a card or phone call. If you need the number, let me know.
Love, Jim

Hi Ian,
Good job at the dentist's office! I'm glad you had fun. Now you're a
pro! Love you lots.

|
[From Tim on March 3, 2004]
Daddy took Ian to the dentist today for his first filling. Yes, my baby, who turns 4 on Monday (March 8), has two cavities. Yikes!
I wasn't sure how Ian would handle the various probes, syringes, and drills that dentists use.
As it turned out the dentist was brilliant and introduced Ian to each of the instruments one at a time. He even let him play with them for a few seconds.
Dr. Tiller called the probe a tooth counter and showed Ian how he could count his teeth with them. He called the drill a "whistle" and let Ian play with the whistle (sans bit) for awhile. The syringe ... well ... he kept the syringe out of sight.
Dr. Tiller started by giving Ian a topical anesthetic that smelled like cherries, which Ian liked. After his gums were slightly numb out came the syringe, which was carefully hidden from Ian's view. The doctor told Ian that he might feel his fingernail press against his gums a bit but that it would be okay. To my surprise Ian took the needle like a champion. Then came the "whistle" ... "Whiiiiiiiiiiiizzzzzzzzzzz." Again, I was pleasantly surprised that Ian took the drill like a champion.
During the drive home I asked Ian if Dr. Tiller hurt him at any point. He said, "no, he tickled me." I asked him if he wanted to go back again sometime, and he assured me he did. Good thing ... next week we come back for filling #2.

love you and miss you.
Love, Megan Davidson

Hi everybody! So cool of Tim to make a family website! We're enjoying the photos...and even recognize most of the people
in them. Man, some of you guys are getting old! I'd love to submit some pictures of my family but I've got a busted
scanner...and you all know how painful it is when your scanner goes :)
Michael and I are well...sort of recovering from the busiest phase of our 10 years together. In recent months we
completed a major addition to our home - a detached garage with a new studio above for Michael's teaching. We did much of
the work ourselves, including the wiring, finish plumbing (yeah, installed toilet, sinks and shower ourselves!), drywall,
tile, cabinetry, concrete, etc. Wore ourselves flat out. Phase two was remodeling/redecorating the greatroom in the main
house, where M's studio used to be. Got that done just before Christmas. It now serves as formal dining for ten and
living room with new home theater sound system.
The new sound system replaced our 20-year-old Sanyo stereo with one (sort of) working speaker! We're enjoying
resurrecting old cds...and actually being able to hear them as recorded! And our Lord of the Rings dvds totally rock. If
you stand in front of the subwoofer it'll blow your pants legs - no kidding! Ok, ok. Enough about all that.
Love to all - hope all of you are well and happy!

Hi, Aiden. What are you doing?
|
[From Tim on January 21, 2004]
I've finally gotten around to publishing my family-oriented website. I first started this project in January 2003 at
which time I worked for about two weeks on it and developed about a dozen pages. Shortly afterwards I became distracted
with school (an MBA program) and put this on the back burner. Now that school is over I thought I'd return to this
hobby.
PLEASE feel free to contribute to this family-oriented bulletin board by entering your comments in the
tables below. I'm sure there are many people who'd love to hear from you and know what you're up to. --Tim
